Dr. Dre beats Jay-Z as the richest man in hip-hop (See the list of top 20 earners)

Forbes has published its list of the top earners in hip-hop, and Dr. Dre is now the richest man in the genre. Last year Jay-Z was top of the list with $37 million, but in a dramatic turn of events, Dr. Dre’s pretax earnings of $110 million, secured him the number 1 position.

It is instructive to note that Dre’s money doesn’t come from only music. His new album, Detox, has been pushed back for more than ten years now, while he rakes in money from his fiercely popular headphones and speakers company.

According to Forbes, Dre’s rise to the top of hip-hop moguldom started when he and Interscope Records chief Jimmy Iovine were walking along the beach pondering whether Dre should launch his own shoe line. “[Forget] sneakers,” said Iovine. “Let’s sell speakers!” Six years later, Dre is making more money than anyone else in the business, all thanks to Beats by Dre. Last year, according to Forbes, Dre collected $100 million when the company sold a 51% stake in the business to Taiwan-based smart-phone maker HTC.
